Texas mega-church pastor Joel Osteen was featured as one of the first guests on Oprah Winfrey’s new show, “Oprah’s Next Chapter,”on January 8, . The one time queen of daytime talk television pressed the popular inspirational author about for his stance on homosexuality. 

Osteen, pastor of Lakewood Church, the largest congregation in America, is known for his controversial “prosperity Gospel” articulated in his televised sermons, and in a series of books to help Christians “achieve your dreams,” “live at your full potential,” and “become a better you.” Critics have accused Osteen of touting shallow theology and skirting the topic of sin, particularly regarding homosexuality.  

Oprah has long promoted her own brand of spirituality that pulls in elements of Christianity but typically only when applicable to personal success and well-being. Joel Osteen Talks Preaching Sin, Materialism, and Gay Marriage

Joel Osteen, megachurch pastor and Brand-new York Times best-selling author, was pressed during a recent interview about his stance on homosexuality and asked if he would ever come out in back of same-sex marriage. The Texas minister, who leads America's largest congregation, explained that he refuses to "harp" on such issues and was "for everybody."

In his appearance on "Katie" this week, the Break Out! author was asked to state his core word in a nugget, which the Lakewood Church pastor said was that "God is good, He's for you, He's on your side."

"When you put your faith in Him, even when you have difficult times, you can rise higher. You can shine, you can be leaders. It's an empowering message, not one that pushes people down," he added.

Conservative televangelist Joel Osteen went on national television this morning and admitted that his own sexual orientation is not a decision -- despite maintaining consistently in previous interviews that being gay is a sin, albeit one that "God gives us the grace to change."

The bestselling author and Texas megachurch leader went on CNN's "Starting Point with Soledad O'Brien" as part of a segment featuring both Osteen and New Yorker writer and former Bill Clinton adviser Richard Socarides.

Osteen has repeatedly tried to tip toe around his stance on homosexuality, telling Piers Morgan in October of that he's not "mad at anybody" and doesn't "dislike anybody," while reiterating his belief that the scripture says homosexuality is a sin," and "two hundred years from now, the Scripture is still going to tell that."

Citing that interview, Socarides, who has often campaigned for LGBT rights, and host O'Brien pushed Osteen to clarify his stance on homosexuality, especially for those gays and lesbians who listen to his sermons that emphasize personal happiness and other uplifti
