Years of Photographs of Gay Men in Love

Hundreds of photographs from the 19th and 20th centuries provide a glimpse at the life of gay men during a time when their love was illegal almost everywhere.

A beautiful team of photographs that spans a century (–) is part of a recent book that suggestions a visual glimpse of what experience may have been like for those men, who went against the rule to find care in one another’s arms. In Loving: A Photographic History of Men in Love s–s, hundreds of images inform the story of love and fondness between men, with some clearly in love and others hinting at more than just friendship. The collection belongs to Hugh Nini and Neal Treadwell, a married couple who has accumulated over 2, photographs of “men in love” during the course of two decades. While the majority of the images hail from the United States and are of predominantly white men, there are images from Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, France, Germany, Japan, Latvia, and the Combined Kingdom among the cache.

I trail an art blog (you can see it in my blogroll) called ultrawolvesunderthefullmoon and the artwork of this Japanese artist caught my attention. In the images above and below I see gay men from the s. Their clothing, preppy haircuts, and cleancut look scream s to me.

A new exhibition features intimate snapshots found at flea markets, antique shops and online auctions

In a series of photographs, men from around the world peck, hug, picnic and gaze into each others’ eyes. So far, more than 4, such images—all taken between the s and s—have been found.

Now, of these romantic snapshots are on show at the Musée Rath in Geneva, Switzerland, which hosts the Musee d’Art et d’Histoire’s temporary exhibitions. The show, titled “Loving,” is based on the photography book Loving: A Photographic History of Men in Love by Hugh Nini and Neal Treadwell.

Nini and Treadwell, who are married, launch the photographs at flea markets, antique shops, online auctions and in family archives over the last two decades. In one, two men hold up a sign that says “Not married but willing to be.” In another, a shirtless man gives another man a piggyback drive. While some of the images were taken in photo booths, many others were likely taken by a third party. Th
