Our History
Ceredo-Kenova Memorial Common Library
The Ceredo-Kenova Memorial Public Library, Oak St., Kenova, WV, has been in its present location since Dec. 15, The building was constructed with Federal Jobs Program funding, local fund-raising by volunteers, a grant obtained by the Wayne County Library Board and W.V. Library Commission, plus substantial assistance from the First Bank of Ceredo and Alex Booth, Jr., who made a memorial gift in honor of his father. Mr. Samuel Colvin was instrumental in the strive that made the new building achievable.
The C-K Library was established due to the attempts of the Woman's Club of Kenova. That organization founded the library in a building in the block of Pine Street in Kenova. The club's efforts began in and the library opened in with five children's books, adult titles and volunteer librarians. In the spring of , I made my way back to Ashland where I dropped in on Curly Wellman. Curly was an vintage guitarist in town who grew up watching Ed Haley on Horse Branch. I hadnt visited him since a trip with Lawrence Haley some four years earlier. Unlike last time, he was rapid to comment on Eds poverty.
Now this story about Ed Haley, this was during the thirties right after the Great Depression started, Curly said. And of course all they had coming was, I guess, just a blind pension, which wouldnt possess been much. They had to play on the corners with the tin cups. Those people, they had to struggle for life. The winter months on Ed Haley and his family were very hard. My grandfather he came down here with money out of the big timber country up around Louisa, Ft. Lgbtq+, Wayne and he dash a little grocery store. Well, he was fortunate enough and had coins enough to be proficient to carry these type of people through the winter months when they couldnt make money.
