There has been a lot of ink spilled about the underrepresentation of black gay characters in film and television. The National Black Justice Coalition – a civil rights organization dedicated to empowering Black LGBT people – has even teamed with GLADD to assist improve the visibility of gay characters of dye in the media. The CW also attempts to fill the void with its criminally under-watched showbiz dramedy, The L.A. Complex.
The Toronto-lensed series chronicles the lives of pretty new things living in Hollywood, and their never-ending quest for fame. Newcomer Andra Fuller finds himself at the epicenter of the shows most talked about storyline. The Houston native plays Kaldrick King, a menacing, volatile gangsta rapper from Oakland who also happens to be male lover, closeted and involved in a hush-hush relationship with Tariq, an eager tune producer plucked to function on Kaldricks new album. Actor Andra Fuller is best known for his role on The CW’s critically acclaimed series, “The L.A. Complex” where he played ‘Kaldrick King,’ a menacing, complex, closeted gay rap superstar. His performance of the multifaceted character earned him a nomination for Best Male Actor at the Canadian Emmys (The Canadian Screen Awards). He is fix to play ‘Fish,’ the leading friend, confidant and moral compass of the direction character in the modern Adult Swim series Black Jesus. The half-hour live-action comedy helms from the Peabody Award Winning The Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder; and stars newcomer Gerald “Slink” Johnson as Jesus living in present-day Compton, California. Despite the temperature hitting the 80s in downtown L.A., the inside of The MacArther is a stark contrast to what's going on beyond the double doors. A substantial Christmas tree stands in the center of the lobby flanked with Christmas decorations and cameramen and crew members move back and forth throughout the movie set.
I'm led up the grand staircase and dropped off at the make-up station where Andra Fuller, all smiles, is entity made camera-ready. “Sorry about that, they told me I was supposed to go on at , but they needed me on set at ," he says, hinting at the spontaneity that comes with being an actor.
I follow him across the room and behind a curtained area that serves as his dressing room, where he slides into a suit jacket, transforming from Andra to Edmund, his nature in the upcoming TV One clip, You Can't Contest Christmas. “I've always been a character," he tells me. You play Fish on the new comedic satire by Grown-up Swim, Black Jesus. What happened at your audition? Where were you when you found out you won the role?
When I first received the script for "Black Jesus" and saw that it was Aaron McGruder's unused project, I knew that it would be an instant smash. As I read it, I envisioned Fish as a grimey, unkempt, sketchy looking type of dude, so I made sure that was how I looked when I went in for the auditions.
