This list was originally published on December 9, It has been updated to contain the latest movies in the growing queer Christmas-movie canon.
Not too extended ago, LGBTQ+ people who wanted to see themselves represented in holiday movies could either (a) pretend or (b) settle for a second-rate film with a queer nature who had very few lines, ambition, or development.
Early in the contemporary homosexual holiday canon, ’s The Family Stone, which stars homosexual icon Sarah Jessica Parker as a (shocker) snobby Unused Yorker spending the holidays at her boyfriend’s family dwelling, became a lgbtq+ hit for its B-plot gay couple with ambitions to adopt a infant. And while the film is still worth an annual watch, so much more has happened in seasonal cinema since SJP’s iconic spilled-strata scene with matriarch Diane Keaton. That is, homosexual and lesbian Christmas movies actually center queer people now — same-sex holiday revelers crus
Single All the Way Makes the Yuletide Gay in Netflixs Cheesy Holiday Rom-com
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a male lover man in possession of a television in December, must be in desire of a cheesy Christmas movie. Whether cinephile, theater lover, or Drag Race connoisseur, everyone enjoys something silly to half view while wrapping presents — and no gay can resist the divine decadence that is Jennifer Coolidge. Enter Single All the Way, a cheesy modern holiday rom-com debuting on Netflix. Gayness isnt some problem to be concealed, fretted about, or made fun of here, its merely part of the given circumstances. Nor is gayness window dressing, cliche-ridden, or milked for comedy. As thoroughly unproblematic a gay Christmas movie as there ever was, unfortunately Single All the Way doesnt leave room for much else.
Led by twinkle-eyed Ugly Betty star Michael Urie, Single All the Way follows a perpetually single man, Peter, who brings his best ally Nick (Philemon Chambers) dwelling for the holidays. The plan is to narrate Peters fa
A year after Hallmark and Lifetime debuted their first holiday movies with gay lead characters, Netflix has answered the calls for greater inclusion in its end-of-year programming with Single All the Way, an unabashed celebration of queer love set against the backdrop of a classic Christmas movie.
Directed by the Tony Award-winning director Michael Mayer and written by Chad Hodge, Single All the Way centers on a perpetually single man named Peter (Ugly Betty’s Michael Urie) who convinces his best friend Nick (Philemon Chambers) to join him and his family for the holidays and pretend that they’re in a romantic relationship. But when his mother Carole (Hocus Pocus’ Kathy Najimy) sets him up on a blind go out with her handsome trainer James (Brothers and Sisters’ Luke Macfarlane), Peter finds himself caught in an unexpected love triangle. In addition to Najimy, Barry Bostwick and Jennifer Robertson, the supporting cast includes the effervescent Jennifer Coolidge, who plays Peter’s aunt Sandy.
“Chad wrote a very great, extremely tight script. It was filled with Christmas
Netflix’s first gay holiday rom-com
When the holiday season rolls around, I find myself pulled towards the lure of Hallmark-esque Christmas movies. They’re simply irresistible with charming small towns, cheesy romances, and holiday cheer.
Netflix has a wide range of original holiday movies out, and heaps of them are released every November. While I haven’t seen all of them, there certainly are a couple of gems.
Of course, it’s a fair critique to say that these types of movies are very formulaic and cliche. With unrealistic plotlines and predictable twists, the movies are by no means masterpieces. The once brooding love interest will always find the true definition of Christmas, and any threats to the holiday will be miraculously resolved. However, despite the cheesiness, there is something so lighthearted and fun about these movies that is hard to ignore.
With Christmas approaching, I set out to watch a novel movie.
Number 8 on Netflix’s top ten charts was “Single All The Way,” released December 2nd, The movie centers on two gay best friends trying to navigate the holidays back ho
