      The Safe Schools Coalition is a public-private partnership functional to help schools turn into safe places where every family can belong, where every educator can train, and where every minor can learn, regardless of gender, gender identity or sexual orientation.


      Gay, Lesbian, Direct Education Network (GLSEN)

      GLSEN is an education organization committed to creating safe schools for all lesbian, homosexual, bisexual and transgender people. GLSEN has free curriculum and resources and can assist you organize a Queer Straight Alliance or provide Professional Development in your school. The Washington chapter is based in Seattle and serves the entire state.

      By the moment Tricia Friedman was 8, she knew that she was different. She grew up and became an educator, but it took her more than a decade to be out in her career.

      People assume that the creator of the How to Be a Surpass Ally podcast has always been confident and comfortable in her identity. Still, she spent many years worrying about what students or parents would think.

      “We really underestimate that internalized message,” Friedman says. “We underestimate how damaging schools have been when it comes to reinforcing gender stereotypes.”

      Only26% of LGBTQ youth always feel secure in their educational facility classrooms, according to the Human Rights Campaign's LGBTQ Youth Report. Just5% tell all of their teachers and academy staff are supportive of LGBTQ people.
